Have your Garden always Looking Tidy, Starting From Your Lawn

A lush, leafy green lawn is what all novice gardeners dream of having. Cultivating yes, planting but above all knowing when to cut and how to do it. For this, you need a good lawn mower. The lawn, in fact, is usually the largest area in the garden and having a high quality lawn mower that fits your grass and the size of your garden is essential.

Buying a lawn mower can seem more difficult than it should be. There are so many different types and the jargon is confusing and sometimes too specific. So let’s try to make some order.

Most lawn mowers are mains powered. This is the best choice for small to medium sized gardens. They are smaller systems, cheaper to buy and easier to store.

Types of lawn mowers for home use: manual lawn mowers

That is the simplest type, the one we can push manually. Again, we have several types:

Cylinder

Cylinder mowers have cylindrical blades that rotate vertically in the front of the mower. They cut by pushing the lawn against a fixed blade at the bottom and they are best for flat lawns that you want to keep short and well-groomed. They can be electric, petrol or motor.

Rotating

Rotary mowers have a single blade that rotates horizontally under the mower, like the propellers of an airplane. They are the most versatile type and will suit most types of grass. They are better than cylindrical mowers at cutting longer and rougher grass and can be powered by mains, rechargeable battery or petrol engine.

Petrol lawn mowers are the best choice for large gardens where a power cord would not be suitable. They are a little more expensive but much more powerful and faster in cutting. They are also easier to maneuver around large objects.

Hover

Hover mowers hover above the ground, making them easier to push and suitable for mowing uneven surfaces. They are a good choice for unusually shaped and cheaper lawns than other types. However, they are not always suitable for larger gardens. They are usually electrically powered and have rotating blades.

Type of Power Supply for Lawn Mowers

Most lawn mowers are mains powered. This is the best choice for small to medium sized gardens. They are smaller systems, cheaper to buy and easier to store. However, check that the cord allows you to cut to the end of your garden before purchasing one.

Additionally, there are the battery-powered lawnmowers that have all the benefits of an electric lawnmower without you having to worry about a cable. However, they can be more expensive than electric models due to the same battery. Modern lithium-ion batteries are lighter and last much longer than traditional nickel-cadmium versions, but they are more expensive.

Last but not least, there are the push mowers. These are generally small cylinder mowers that you simply push around the lawn and that work thanks to your muscle power. They are best for small gardens and do not use electricity or produce noise and emissions.

Petrol lawn mowers are the best choice for large gardens where a power cord would not be suitable. They are a little more expensive but much more powerful and faster in cutting. They are also easier to maneuver around large objects as outdoor flowerpots, …. However, keep in mind that petrol lawn mowers will need maintenance like car engines and you will need to check and top up the oil periodically.

Last but not least, there are the push mowers. These are generally small cylinder mowers that you simply push around the lawn and that work thanks to your muscle power. They are best for small gardens and do not use electricity or produce noise and emissions. They are therefore also the most ecological choice but, unfortunately, depending on the garden, also the less practical one. In fact, push mowers are not suitable for larger or sloping gardens or for people who have difficulty pushing.

Obviously, in this article we have described the alternatives to take care of a small garden. If your outdoor space is much larger and you are the proud owner of a villa with a park, it goes without saying that, in this case, none of the lawn mowers described so far are ideal for your needs.

In fact, there is a whole category of motorized lawnmowers that can be driven, very similar to those used for the care of lawns in football fields or municipal parks. These are obviously tools that require much higher costs than the models just seen but which, thanks to the ability to travel great distances without physical effort, will be extremely practical and easy to use to have a park with a very tidy and well-kept lawn.
